Cleo at the Bridge

Hello all,

My female Newf, Cleo is nearly 11 years old and has been in perfect health her entire life. She has, over the last six months, developed progressively weaker legs, to the point this evening where she could barely stand to go out and pee.

She's been taking cod liver oil & Glucosamine sulphate for her joints and recently the vet has put her on Metacam but nothing seems to be working.

She doesn't seem to be in any pain, but she go very distressed trying to get up tonight and I had to give her help. As you can imagine, I'm in bits over this because she's a healthy dog and I hate the thought that she may need to be put down.

The vet's been to examine her, and has given us some pain killers, but I thought other Newf owners may be able to suggest something if they have had a similar problem.

Thanks for reading,

Rob

Our first Newf was pretty active until she reached ten or so... But then had to take Rimadyl during her last two or three years. That seemed to help her a lot, but I know others have had problems with it.

If she was my dog I would take her in for a CBC/diff, a chemistry profile, and a 4DX if you have Lyme disease in your area. In my area it would cost around$150. I would buy a nicely padded bed to help reduce pain on the pressure points. If she's not in pain, could you keep her muscles built up by walking or water therapy? What about an x-ray to see how bad or good things are? I wish I could think of more suggestions for her.

Thanks all for your kind replies. Unfortunately Cleo's legs got a lot worse very quickly and last week she could no longer get up. She died peacefully at home. I miss her terribly.

Sorry to hear about the loss of your beloved Cleo. Now she will be pain free, but forever in your heart. Sending big hugs and slobbery kisses.
